What Kind of targets are OK at Zia
Range? How should shooting be performed?
These rules are a further
development of NRA RULE#4
Know your target and what is beyond.
-
Unacceptable
Targets:
-
Don't use
glass, ceramic targets or ultra modern hard plastic that will leave
shards. The fragments are a hazard to people's feet and hands.
-
The front
gate lock is not an acceptable target.
-
Don't shoot
barrels, you could get a ricochet. They also are used as props
during shooting events and the sharp holes could injure our members.
-
Don't shoot
at tires. You will get ricochets from rubber steel belted
tires. Tires are intended as props during shooting activities and
are never used as targets.
-
Don't shoot
animals that wander downrange. It is a health nuisance and calls
into question your sensibilities.
-
There are
no targets at Zia at ranges greater than 600 yards.
-
Please do
not use targets frames as targets.
-
Don't use
shot guns with shot or slugs on celotex backed targets. They are
to easily destroyed. Use slugs and shot on free standing targets
without celotex backing. Celotex is the black sheeting on wooden
frames that paper targets are stapled to. You'll see celotex
target stands on the eastern portion of the west ranges, about 75 feet
to the east of the bermed shooting areas.
-
Acceptable
Targets:
-
Targets of
paper, metal and plastic materials including aluminum cans, milk jugs or
cartons, official paper targets, and paper or metal silhouettes.
-
Be Considerate.
-
Use common
sense. For instance, it is not advisable to use a picture of
political figure as a target.
Work with
the other shooters on your range to get a ceasefire every 20-25 minutes
or so for target repair and scoring.
-
Steel or metal
targets are fine with the following exceptions:
-
Don't use metal targets in the eastern berm area, berm #1, of the west
range. Ricochets may pass over the berm into the 200 yard range
impact area and could endanger shooters downrange repairing targets
during their ceasefire.
-
Do not
stand within 36 feet of an impenetrable metal target during shooting
activities. You could be hit with a ricochet.
-
Metal
targets should be flat, with the target face perpendicular to the line
of fire. This will prevent ricochets.
-
Do not use
metal targets on the 600 yard, eastern, hi-power rifle range target
frames.
-
Target
Positioning and Angles of fire.
-
Targets
should be placed directly down range of your shooting position.
-
Place
targets on frames so that shots will pass through the open
framework. Some damage to frames is inevitable, but purposely
shooting frames is rude to your fellow members and expensive to the
club.
-
Do not
shoot at targets diagonally on the range. This keeps rounds in the
impact area and prevents ricochets.
-
Do not
shoot into the sand at shallow angles. It will ricochet.
-
After rain
storms or during snow melt, do not shoot into standing water. It
will ricochet.
-
Do not aim
high and hit the power lines.
-
Care of Berms
-
Targets
should be placed so that rounds do not strike the tops of the berms.
This prevents erosion of the berms.
-
Place
targets on stands or frames, do not climb the berms. This prevents
erosion of the berms.
-
Clean up your
targets when you are done. Remove paper targets from stands, and clean
up aluminum cans or plastic bottles.
